Roosterfish: Pacific Coast of Panama

Shore casting or from the boat. A fish that decides.

We work roosterfish from the boat, from kayaks, and from shore. The local crew knows specific points on this coast built over years of fishing. When the fish are showing, you read the birds and move toward the break.

The roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) is one of the few large pelagic species that can be targeted both from shore and from a boat. Absent from the Caribbean, it is strictly confined to the eastern tropical Pacific, from the Mexican coast down to Peru. On Panama's Pacific coast, certain sand beaches and rocky points offer direct casting access to fish that regularly exceed 30 kilograms.

Biology and Behavior

The roosterfish is a visual, surface predator. It hunts in groups or alone in the surf zone and on adjacent rocky shallows, following sardine and anchovy columns that current and swell concentrate against the coast. Its seven elongated dorsal spines, which it raises during aggressive phases, are visible from a distance and indicate a fish in active pursuit. Strikes occur at first light and during tidal changes, when bait is moving. The roosterfish follows the lure, decides, turns away. An irregular retrieve with sudden accelerations triggers the attack more reliably than a steady pace. Speed and direction matter more than the lure itself.

Reading the Water

Reading the water always comes before fishing. Lateral current lines, surface bait movement, the activity of frigatebirds and boobies diving are the indicators. A school of roosterfish in active pursuit signals itself through surface disturbance and jumping bait. When they are there, the strikes are violent and the runs long. When they are not, you move or you wait.

Technique and Tackle

Boat, kayak, and shore casting all work on Panama's Pacific coast. From the water, you run toward breaking fish or follow the local crew to their spots. From shore, certain sand beaches and rocky points give direct access to fish in the break. Poppers and stickbaits from 30 to 120 grams, braid PE 4 to PE 6 minimum. The fight is physical. A 20-kilogram roosterfish in the surf current pulls with a consistency that wears you down. The first hundred meters of the run are decisive. You hold without forcing, then recover ground progressively.

Seasonality

The best period corresponds to the Pacific dry season, December to April. Active upwelling, colder and clearer water, bait concentrated against the coast. In the rainy season, visibility drops and fish are more scattered. Fishing remains possible but less predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is roosterfish found in the Caribbean?

No. The roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis) is strictly confined to the eastern tropical Pacific, from Mexico down to Peru. It is completely absent from the Caribbean.

What is the best time to catch roosterfish in Panama?

December to April, during the Pacific dry season. Active upwelling concentrates bait against the coast and keeps water clear. Fishing remains possible in the rainy season but is less predictable.

How big do roosterfish get in Panama?

On Panama's Pacific coast, fish regularly exceed 30 kilograms. The seven elongated dorsal spines are the species' most distinctive feature.

Can you catch roosterfish from shore?

Yes. It is one of the few large pelagic species accessible from shore. Certain sand beaches and rocky points on Panama's Pacific coast allow direct casting access to large individuals.

What lures work best for roosterfish?

Poppers and stickbaits on the surface, between 30 and 120 grams. An irregular retrieve with sudden accelerations triggers strikes more reliably than a steady pace.
